Living Out Isaiah 58:7a - by Hearts for the Homeless
In the book of Isaiah, chapter 58 verse 7a, we find a simple yet powerful command, “Share your food with the hungry…”
At its heart, this verse calls us to extend our hands and hearts to those in need. It’s not a suggestion, it’s a way of life—a sacred invitation to live with generosity, humility, and compassion. Since 1990, Hearts for the Homeless® has been dedicated to serving the community through relationship ministry. Characterized by a profound spiritual motivation to share the Word of God, Hearts’ staff and volunteers nourish the community physically and spiritually through various outreach programs and initiatives.
As Hearts’ longest-running outreach, the Hearts Mobile Soup Kitchen brings both nourishment and the love of God to those in need—five nights a week, every week of the year. Outside the downtown library, our dedicated volunteer teams serve hot meals, sandwiches, drinks, and desserts to individuals facing hunger and hardship. Many of these volunteers are spiritually motivated, offering not only food and clothing but also companionship and guidance on local support services. In 2024, the Hearts Mobile Soup Kitchen served more than 21,000 meals to poor and homeless members of our community—ensuring that no one has to go without a warm meal, a kind word, or the dignity they deserve.
Spreading the Word of God through food is a powerful expression of faith in action. It reflects the heart of the Gospel—serving others, meeting basic needs, and creating opportunities for connection, dignity, and love. When you share food with someone who is hungry, you’re offering more than nourishment. Jesus Himself often ministered around food, and meals became moments for miracles, teaching, and transformation.
Food fills more than stomachs. When offered with love, it can nourish the soul, open hearts, and reflect the generous nature of God. It’s a simple act—but one with eternal impact. Sharing food is sharing Christ. Whether through a hot meal, a shared table, or a bag of groceries, the Gospel can be served—one plate at a time.
We’re deeply grateful for the ongoing support of The Chapel as we serve the chronically poor and homeless in WNY—offering both nourishment and the hope found in God’s Word. The Hearts Mobile Soup Kitchen stands as a powerful example of the Kingdom of God in action, extending far beyond the walls of a church or the bounds of a Sunday service.
