Building Hope

by Beth Weaver, EduNations

Motivated by compassion for “the least of these,” EduNations gives forgotten children tangible reasons to hope. More than teaching the ABCs, we create schools in Sierra Leone, Western Africa, that become self-supporting beacons of growth and learning. By helping to educate forgotten children today, we help create a brighter future for this nation tomorrow. The key to development in under-resourced communities is education. When boys and girls learn, the lives of their families and communities are transformed. Learning is at the center of physical, spiritual, and emotional health. EduNations is committed to the whole child, whole community, and holistic development.

To achieve this aim, EduNations started with Primary Schools in each of the six villages. Then as Primary School students progressed, EduNations built Junior Secondary Schools. For those wanting these young people to complete their education, the question has been, “Where will the children go after graduation from Junior Secondary Schools?” And so, it became time to advance to the building of a Senior Secondary School in the village of Rokassa, which is the hub of EduNations’ work in Sierra Leone. This campus will be the long-awaited school where graduates from EduNations’ Junior Secondary Schools can take their education to the next level.

Without an EduNations Senior Secondary School, graduates of Junior Secondary Schools have been faced with difficult alternatives: either leaving school or traveling to nearby bigger towns to complete their education. Until now, many have ended their education because they did not have the money to continue. Others who have gone to larger cities to attend Senior Secondary School have had serious personal problems, like unplanned pregnancy and living far from home. Both alternatives have been discouraging to other prospective students.

To solve this dilemma, EduNations’ Rokassa Senior Secondary School project was launched in 2018 with the vision of a learner-friendly school where children from different districts in Sierra Leone could come to have a first-class education. The EduNations Rokassa Senior Secondary School includes a school building that will have the capacity for up to 800 students to be enrolled each year.  The school will provide dormitory living accommodations for more than 100 children and 24 teachers, since the students will be coming from their various communities to Rokassa.

They will also receive all their meals and free medical care at the Orfonthy Community Health Center. With a local church in the village, the students will have access to spiritual support and discipleship from a growing, vibrant, indigenously led congregation. This project is bringing hope beyond measure to our students and their families who are excited to expand their education and build a bridge to their future!

Since October 2019, construction has progressed to the point of buildings being finished and roofed. As this stage of the project nears completion, we would appreciate your continued prayers and support for God to bless the work that has already been funded, for “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1 ESV).
