An Update from MissionGO
For over 20 years, MissionGO has been investing in the education system of war-torn Sierra Leone. Over 1,300 primary schools were wiped out during the country’s civil war, which ended in the early 2000s, and many children were left without an opportunity for formal education. The Lord has answered our prayers by granting His abundant favor on our educational endeavors.
In 2019, MissionGO established a certified school for girls called “The Institute Place Secondary School of Mokanji” (IPSS) which allows for a Christ-centered education while meeting legal standards. There are 51 young ladies in our school—almost half have made professions of faith and have been baptized!
Just this year, God has opened an unexpected door of opportunity. We were approached by local Muslim chiefs of neighboring villages who have watched the success of our programs and the high standard of our secondary schools, and they have offered us 12 acres of land to start our first primary school in Mokanji for boys and girls! They are giving the land and 12 buildings (damaged in the war) to us at no charge—with no expectation of remuneration. They said it’s “because of the impact that MissionGO has made on this community.” We have renovated several of the buildings and are preparing to open our first Primary School this fall to be able to teach, train, and disciple young boys and girls in the truth of God’s Word!
We have seen how the Good News of Jesus Christ can transform our students’ lives, and precious Jami is just one example. Jami came to Mokanji about two years ago, hungry and destitute. After caring for her physical needs, a MissionGO missionary asked if she ever thought about returning to school. She laughed. “Of course, but I have no way to pay for it, so I try to put it out of my mind.” Jami was offered a scholarship to attend IPSS, and she accepted. While in computer class, Jami wrote the following, entitled: “My Changed Life.” “I was a Muslim, living in darkness but because God has a good plan for me, He made me come to light through JESUS CHRIST, my Lord and personal Savior. I thank God for the new life He has created in me, showing me the right way, and made me come to light. I am very happy to be among the Christ family.” His light now radiates through her!
We praise the Lord for how He has answered prayers to allow MissionGO to share the Gospel with children and youth in Sierra Leone!
